World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)

WIPO stands for The World Intellectual Property Organisation and is a specialised agency of the United Nations.

This organisation was first founded in 1967 and is charged with managing intellectual property policy, services, information and cooperation globally. As of 2023, there are 193 participating member states (countries).

Supporting not only the protection of intellectual property (IP) globally, they also offer a range of free services related to IP. This includes easily accessible online courses covering all aspects of IP in over 10 languages.

What Does The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Do?

WIPO, by definition, aims to protect intellectual property around the world by working closely with member states, other relevant organisations and unions.

They also work to ensure the cooperation of all member states with one another in line with the treaties established by WIPO.

Additionally, WIPO makes it easier to do research and avoid infringing on another's IP by offering free access to regularly updated global IP databases. Registered trademarks, patents, brand names and more can all be searched via these databases.

How Effective Is WIPO At Protecting IP?

WIPO governs IP globally, keeps up-to-date IP records and ensures member countries adhere to all international IP treaties.

WIPO administers several important international systems that are used for filing IP rights internationally including the PCT International Patent System, the Madrid International Trademark System and the Hague International Design System.

This allows them to offer the best possible protection for your IP outside of your home country and assist in enforcing your rights when necessary through the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center.

Acting as a single point of contact, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) handles disputes of certain IP rights which can also more effectively be dealt with through the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. Dispute resolution via WIPO is typically faster, easier and much cheaper than pursuing an infringer through formal litigation.
