Patent Firm

A patent firm by definition is a business entity formed by one or more patent attorneys for the purpose of practising patent law.

It may also be referred to as a patent attorney's office or patent law office. A patent firm will typically also offer services related to other areas of intellectual property law.

In Australia, these may include things such as trademarks, copyright, plant breeders rights and design rights.

Purpose

The role of a patent firm is to advise on legislation related to intellectual property, specifically patents.

This includes applying for patents both here and overseas, managing their processing and defending against infringement of granted patents.

Patent attorneys may work individually or with other members of their patent firm to manage patent enquiries. While much of the work of a patent attorney occurs within the firm’s offices, on occasion, court attendance may also be required as an expert witness or to support a litigation attorney or barrister.
